Procedures and resources for students and employees 

IMPORTANT NOTICE 

If a representative of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or any other individual representing themselves as an immigration official requests access to Sandburg students or employees on college grounds, please follow the procedures outlined below. 

Pending further instruction from the chief safety officer or the vice president of student development, DO NOT: 

  1. Confirm whether the student or employee is in attendance; 
  2. Release student or employee information; 
  3. Make the student or employee available for an interview; or  
  4. Answer any questions or grant agents permission to enter any buildings or facilities.

Procedures for campus community

If you encounter an immigration official on campus, follow these location-specific procedures: 

GALESBURG CAMPUS 

  • Escort the immigration official to Public Safety, D building.
  • Contact 309.341.5304.
  • After completing this process, return to normal duties.

 

Carthage campus

  • Escort the immigration official to the main office and call Public Safety at 309.341.5304. 
  • Also notify the executive director of Carthage campus at 217.357.3129, ext. 7247. 
  • After completing this process, return to normal duties.

 

518 COLLECTIVE (FORMER ANNEX)

  • Escort the immigration official to an available private office and call Public Safety at 309.341.5304. 
  • After completing this process, return to normal duties.

 

Support resources for students and employees

Students and employees who are part of our Charger community may need support if an interaction with immigration officers occurs, whether on or off campus. If you become aware of an individual or group who needs support, please offer one of the following resources:

Oversees international students' immigration status, recruitment and orientation processes, and support resources.

 

TimelyCare 24/7 telehealth service

Free mental and medical telehealth service available to all Sandburg students and employees 

Rhonda Nelson — campus counselor 

  • Provides on-campus and virtual counseling to Sandburg students.

Immigration rights and resources

Know your rights 

  • It's important for all members of our community to understand their constitutional rights. If you find yourself interacting with an immigration officer in any location, including your home, your workplace or out in the community, remember: 

You should 

  • Remain calm and keep your hands where the officer can see them.  

You have the right to 

  • Remain silent when questioned or arrested by immigration officers. 
  • Do not discuss your immigration or citizenship status with the police, immigration agents or other officials. 
  • Do not sign anything you don't understand. Instead, state that you wish to speak with an attorney.
