This federal grant program, originally developed from the Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 and created as a result of the war on poverty, TRIO Upward Bound helps increase the success of low-income students in post-secondary education. We serve Galesburg, Knoxville, Abingdon-Avon and ROWVA high schools.

The Sandburg Upward Bound program is 100% funded in the amount of $312,480 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

What services does Upward Bound offer?

The UB program offers several services to its participants throughout the school year:

Weekly

UB staff meet with you, as a program student, at your schools during a free period or over your lunch hour. Topics of discussion at these meetings range from academic skill development to college and financial aid assistance.

Monthly

You’ll attend a Saturday college event on Sandburg’s Galesburg campus to discuss topics related to college success. Upward Bound also offers its students off-campus experiences each month, including college visits, trips to museums, theater performances, etc.

Tutoring

Academic tutoring is a service offered weekly to all UB participants.

Mandatory volunteer hours

Sandburg UB participants must also complete (minimum) 16 hours of community service each program year to be in our program. You can either participate in Upward Bound volunteer activities or community service opportunities elsewhere. Part of being a well-rounded citizen is making your community a better place to live and/or positively impacting other individuals. Many scholarship opportunities also require mandatory volunteer hours.

Mandatory summer program

Attendance

Once committed to the Sandburg Upward Bound program, you must attend the summer program. For freshman and sophomores this entails six weeks of summer enrichment at Sandburg. For juniors this is an internship during the summer. If you’re eligible, but not selected for an internship, the director will determine a suitable project for your summer program. Seniors are required to take Psychology 101, summer melt and summer bridge.

You can miss only three days — excused or unexcused. Missing activities must receive prior approval by the Upward Bound staff; requests are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Participation

You’re expected to participate fully in all activities, classes and projects. You’ll participate in assessments, including but not limited to, assessments of learning objectives, assessment of program satisfaction and assessment of academic performance.
