SCHOLARSHIPS & ENDOWMENTS

Sandburg has a strong reputation as a national leader in value and affordability. Annual gifts and endowment scholarships directly impact Sandburg students by enhancing their student experience, providing financial aid, supporting academic programs and achieving success. With the generosity of many committed friends and donors, the Sandburg Foundation awards more than $250,000 each year in scholarship funds to Sandburg students.

Annual scholarships make a difference every year.

Creating an annual scholarship is a great way to honor a loved one, promote your business and give back to Sandburg students. Scholarship support is crucial to provide an exceptional education to deserving students from all backgrounds, regardless of their ability to pay. A simple way you can meet this need is with a gift to establish an annual scholarship.

Scholarships of $500 or more annually allow you to name your scholarship and meet your recipient(s) at the annual scholarship dinner in the fall.

Endowed scholarships leave a legacy.

An endowed scholarship is an act of belief — belief in the future of Sandburg. Belief the world needs. Sandburg and its graduates change the world for good. You’re joining the long legacy of donors who’ve contributed to student success at Sandburg.

Sandburg’s Foundation has a notably strong endowment ensuring long-term stability and financial security for Sandburg. Establishing a named endowed scholarship provides a permanent and personal way for you to make a difference in the life of a Sandburg student. The Foundation team will work with you to establish award guidelines.

Some criteria may reflect a/an:

  • Special area of interest
  • Academic discipline
  • Geographic region
  • Academic merit
  • Financial need

An endowed scholarship becomes a permanently endowed fund when the contribution reaches a minimum of $10,000 and can be pledged over a number of years. The scholarship amount is based on the interest earned and accumulated each year, and to help your endowment grow, we take a small percentage of your interest earned each year and reinvest it with the principle. The more your endowment grows, the more scholarship dollars it produces.

Endowed funds are invested and managed by the Sandburg Foundation and overseen by the Foundation Board of Directors. Volunteers and staff members serve on the scholarship review committee to award scholarships each spring, and each fall, the Foundation hosts an annual scholarship dinner where you'll meet your scholarship recipient(s).

Life estate reserved

Benefits of a life estate reserved gift

  • Receive a federal income tax deduction for the value of the remainder interest in your home or farm.
  • Preserve your lifetime use and control of your home or farm.
  • Create a life estate based on more than one life. This will preserve the use of the property for you and a loved one, such as a spouse or dependent child.

How a life estate gift works

  1. You deed your home or farm to Sandburg. The deed includes a provision that gives you the right to use your home or farm for the rest of your life and that of any other life estate party named in the deed.
  2. You and Sandburg sign a maintenance, insurance and taxes (MIT) agreement to explain you will do your best to keep the property in good condition, maintain property insurance and pay the property taxes.
  3. When the owners of the life estate have passed away, your home or farm will belong to Sandburg. We’ll use or sell the property to further our educational mission.

The life estate can last for your life or based on your life and that of another person, such as a spouse or loved one. It’s possible for you to make a gift of your property even though there’s a mortgage upon the residence. You’re responsible for the maintenance, insurance and taxes on the property, just as you were prior to creating the life-estate gift. If, at some point in the future, you’re no longer able to live independently in your home, we may be able to help you use your life estate to create a lump-sum cash payment (with joint sale) or create an income stream (using the life estate to fund a charitable remainder trust or charitable gift annuity).

  • Is the property marketable?
  • Are there any undue restrictions on the use, display or sale of the property?
  • Are there any public relations issues related to acceptance of the property?
  • Are there carrying costs, such as insurance, lease space, maintenance to preserve value or costs of sale or appraisal, that will create a negative cash flow for the Foundation?
